Among 45 neurotypical adults, higher autistic traits related to more shame-proneness and less guilt-proneness, with resting-state connectivity between the right frontal pole and cortical midline regions helping explain parts of those associations.

What the researchers did

Researchers measured autistic traits, shame- and guilt-proneness, and whole-brain resting-state fMRI in 45 neurotypical adults. They tested whether functional connectivity of cortical midline structures mediated links between autistic traits and these self-conscious emotions. This is a brain-correlation study in a non-clinical sample — not a treatment trial and not a study of diagnosed autistic patients.

What they found

  • Higher autistic traits associated with higher shame-proneness.
  • Higher autistic traits associated with lower guilt-proneness.
  • Connectivity between the right frontal pole and midline regions (including precuneus and cingulate areas) mediated the positive autistic-traits → shame link.
  • Frontal pole–precuneus connectivity also mediated the negative autistic-traits → guilt link.

What this means for families and therapists

  • Shame (global “I am bad”) and guilt (specific “I did something wrong”) are different — support that reduces global self-attack may matter when autistic traits are high.
  • Do not over-read one small neurotypical sample as proof about all autistic people.
