A systematic review of 11 randomized trials found that research on virtual reality for social and communication skills in autistic children is too inconsistent to say which type of virtual reality works best.
What the researchers did
The team ran a systematic review and attempted a network meta-analysis (a method that compares several treatments even when few head-to-head trials exist). They searched Chinese and English databases for randomized controlled trials from January 1990 to February 2025. Eleven trials with 718 autistic children under 18 compared some form of virtual reality with a non–virtual-reality control (usual care or other therapies). Eight different virtual-reality technologies appeared across studies. Study quality was assessed with standard tools.
What they found
- The 11 trials differed sharply in technology, session dose, outcomes, and ages. Statistical heterogeneity reached about 91.9%, meaning most differences between results reflected real methodological differences, not chance alone.
- Most technologies appeared in only one study, so the comparison network was sparse and unstable.
- Confidence in every comparison was rated “very low,” so rankings of which approach is better cannot be trusted.
- The authors conclude the evidence is not ready for meaningful head-to-head claims and call for more standardized future trials.
What this means for families and therapists
- Treat marketing claims that one virtual-reality product is “proven best” for social skills with caution — the comparative science is not there yet.
- Virtual reality may still help some children as a supplement, depending on age, interests, and adult support during sessions; it should not replace therapies with clearer evidence.
- Ask providers what evidence supports that specific program and how progress will be measured for your child.
