Among 48 autistic preschoolers in India, better visual perception scores were linked with greater parent-reported participation in daily living and learning tasks — associations, not proof that training visual perception will fix participation.

What the researchers did

Researchers assessed 48 autistic children aged 4–6 years (mean about 5; 67% boys; 79% in regular schools). Visual perception was measured with a motor-free standard test (MVPT-4). Parents reported participation across daily living, instrumental tasks, play, leisure, social activities, and education — including diversity, frequency, independence, child enjoyment, and parent satisfaction. Autism severity used a culturally adapted Indian scale. Analyses tested correlations between visual perception and participation.

What they found

  • Participation was limited relative to typical norms across measured areas (reported p < 0.001).
  • Better visual perception linked to lower autism severity (r = −0.43, p = 0.002) and greater participation diversity (r = 0.40, p = 0.004).
  • For daily living and instrumental tasks, stronger visual perception tracked with higher scores on all five participation aspects.
  • For play and leisure, correlations with participation were mostly negative (better visual perception, less reported participation in those domains).
  • Social and education domains were mixed; enjoyment sometimes correlated negatively (r = −0.43, p = 0.002).

What this means for families and therapists

  • When self-care or classroom tasks are hard, ask whether visual perception (figure–ground, visual memory) has been considered alongside sensory and motor needs.
  • Home practice can include puzzles, matching, and sorting — as supports, not as a cure.
  • Therapists should not assume that improving visual perception will automatically increase enjoyment of play or social activities; those may need separate goals.

Limitations and what we don't know yet

  • Small single-region Indian sample (n = 48).
  • Cross-sectional; cannot prove causation.
  • Parent-report participation can be biased; no typically developing control group in the design.
  • MVPT-4 does not cover all visual–motor skills.
