What the researchers did
Researchers eye-tracked people watching pre-recorded conversations. Speakers sometimes wore sunglasses that removed fine eye-region information. Experiment 1 compared higher vs lower autistic traits; Experiment 2 compared higher vs lower ADHD traits (about 48 participants per experiment; trait measures, not clinical diagnoses). This was a lab attention study, not therapy research.
What they found
- Higher autistic traits linked to less looking at key facial features (faces/eyes) while watching talkers.
- ADHD traits did not show the same reduction in face-looking in this design.
- Sunglasses disrupted attention at speaker changes: fewer and later looks to the new speaker for participants overall.

- Looking away is not automatically “not listening” — social attention can differ without meaning disengagement.
- Pushing forced eye contact may fight a natural attention style; teach multiple cues (voice, posture, turn-taking).
